Pitru Paksha 2023: Do’s and Don’ts one must follow during Shradh

In Hindu religion, the 16-day period known as Shradh Paksha or Pitru Paksha has immense sacred significance. Pitru Paksha falls in the month of Ashwin month. During this period, people revere their ancestors by engaging in rituals like Pind Daan and Pitra Puja.

These practises are thought to lessen Pitru Dosh and offer redemption to ancestors. Organising auspicious gatherings, eating alcohol, purchasing new clothing or shoes, and visiting well-known temples are some of the actions that are deemed unlucky during Shradh Paksha.

This year, Pitru Paksha is beginning on September 29, 2023. The first day of Pitru Paksha is commonly known as Purnima shradh or pratipada.

Here are some do’s and don’ts that one should follow, as per hindu mythology.

• The day you perform Shradh to seek the blessings of your ancestors, you can offer food and clothes to the Brahmin.
• Buying clothes and shoes are prohibited during these days.
• Inauguration or purchasing something new is not considered auspicious during these days.
• Pind Daan must be performed in Gaya Ji, Ujjain, and other locations recommended for Pitra Disha Nivarana Puja by those with Pitra Dosha in their horoscopes during this time.
• One may invite a qualified priest or brahmin who can perform Pitra Tarpan and eat the meal at home.
• Feed cow, crows, dogs and ants is highly rewarding after performing shradh.
• Events like marriages, engagements and roka ceremonies should be avoided.
• Avoid doing tamasik activities.
• Don’t eat onion, garlic, egg and meat during these days.
• Consuming alcohol is strictly prohibited.
• Avoid buying new vehicle, new house.
• Auspicious tasks like Girha Pravesh should be avoided during these days.
• Visit to prominent temples should be avoided.
• Buying gold, silver or artificial jewellery is considered inauspicious.
• The person who performs shradh must avoid cutting hair, nails and shaving.
