Mauni Amavasya 2024: Devotees offer prayers, take holy dip at Prayagraj's Sangam and Haridwar

Amid chilly season, thousands of devotees from various states congregated at the Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj and Haridwar and took a holy bath in the River Ganges, on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya' on Friday morning.

In addition to praying to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, devotees flocked to Ayodhya's Saryu Ghat early this morning to take a sacred bath in the river.

On the day of Mauni Amavasya, people also descended upon Varanasi and offered their prayers in accordance with customs and rituals.

Women were seen doing bhajans with earthen lamps while performing rituals.

Significance of Mauni Amavasya

Mauni Amavasya, also known as Magha or Maghi Amavasya, which is one of the sacred Hindu occasions dedicated to honoring ancestors and predecessors. The name ‘Mauni’ means silence, and the day of Mauni Amavasya is dedicated to the practice of silence. On this day, devotees take a pledge to remain silent and experience spiritual elevation.
It is believed that maintaining Mauni Vrat and performing Pitru Dosh puja on this day is considered to be good to ask for forgiveness of the past sins. 

Apart from this, doing charity, donations and organizing pujas are considered to be meritorious, and people seek serenity and tranquility in life and perform rituals for the 'Pitru Dosha'.

Meanwhile, people are also set to visit the 'Magh Mela' also called as 'Kumbh Mela' or 'Magh Kumbh Mela' organized in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj from January 6 till February 18.
