Lord Shani or Shani dev, is also known as the God of justice, is a popular deity in Hindus. Lord Shavi is prayed to ward off evil and obstacles from life. Shavi dev is the son of Lord Surya (Sun).

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shani rewards or punishes people for their deeds, either it is good or bad. Planet Saturn represents Lord Shani in astrology. Yama, who is other son of Surya, is known as the God of death and punishes people after their demise. As per mythology it is believed that people, who remain in the good books of Shani dev, can achieve all their goals in life easily.

In Hindus, each day is associated with a different planet. It is believed that celebrating different Gods on different days adds meaning to one’s everyday life. As per astrology, each God has a different contribution to make in the life of devotees and celebrating a particular God on a specified day just amplifies the auspiciousness of the day. Saturday is associated with Lord Shani. It is also believed that no other planet can deliver positive results, which Lord Shani can do.

Lord Shani represents struggle, and it is believed that he showers his blessings upon you if you overcome the struggle posed by him become more mature, insightful and spiritually lifted. He urges hard work and disciplined behaviour and believes in slow delivery of your good and bad deeds. 

Here’s are some rituals that one can follow to appease Lord Shani

Chant mantras while offering him sesame seeds and mustard oil.

One of the most common ways is to take an iron utensil, fill it with mustard oil and sesame seeds, and offer it to idol of Lord Shani while reciting the Shani tantric mantra, Om Praam Preem Praom Saha Shanayshchraey Namah.

Pray to Lord Hanuman

As always, Lord Hanuman comes to the rescue! It is believed that people who worship Lord Hanuman with the utmost devotion receive Lord Shani’s blessings.

Worship crow and the Peepal tree

You should worship the Peepal tree, the king of trees, in order to honour Lord Shani. One may offer some mustard oil on Peepal tree on Saturdays.

Devotees can also feed a crow because it is said that Lord Shani charioted on one. Crows are not considered lucky birds in India, thus if you want to avoid bad luck, make it a point to please the crow.

Make donations

As per Hindu mythology, one of the best ways to make Lord Shani happy, is to help poor and needy. Making donations to needy can make you help correcting you deeds. Donate, without seeking anything in return.

Clear unwanted clutter

Lord Shani is said to take away everything that isn’t necessary for your development. Therefore, one should make sure to clean up your mess before he chooses what should be eliminated from your life. Clean your home and get rid of any trash materials that have been laying around for as long as possible but have never been used by you.
