New Delhi: Hartalika Teej, celebrated annually on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month, is a significant Hindu festival. This year, it falls on September 6, coinciding with an auspicious alignment of Ravi and Shukla Yoga along with Chitra Nakshatra. The day is marked by married women observing a waterless fast and performing rituals in honor of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Timings of ritual

The festival holds special importance this year due to the rare conjunction of Ravi and Shukla Yoga with Chitra Nakshatra. According to the Vedic calendar, Hartalika Teej begins on September 5 at 12:22 pm and concludes on September 6 at 03:01 pm. The ideal time for performing the puja is during Pradosh Kaal, which starts after sunset at 06:36 pm. The morning Puja Muhurta is from 06:02 am to 08:33 am.

How to worship?

To begin the observance of Hartalika Teej, devotees should create idols of the deities—Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. These idols are traditionally crafted from sand and black clay. Sand symbolizes the earth and grounding, while black clay represents purity and sanctity. The process of making these idols by hand not only connects devotees with the divine but also allows them to infuse personal devotion and reverence into their creation.

The worship platform should be meticulously prepared to honor the deities. Use banana leaves to cover the platform, which is a traditional symbol of auspiciousness and purity in Hindu rituals. Decorate the space with fresh flowers, which add a fragrant and vibrant touch to the setting. This preparation reflects the sacredness of the occasion and creates a conducive environment for performing the puja.

Performing the pooja

The puja or worship ceremony should ideally be conducted during the Pradosh Kaal, the time period after sunset, which is considered highly auspicious. Begin the puja by invoking the deities with prayers and mantras. This step is crucial for inviting divine blessings and establishing a spiritual connection.

Offer Suhaag items to godess and clothes such as dhoti and towel to Lord Shiva. These items are symbolic of the devotee’s respect and devotion. The dhoti represents simplicity and purity, while the towel symbolizes service and humility.

Alignment of Chitra Nakshatra

This year's Hartalika Teej is particularly auspicious due to the alignment of Chitra Nakshatra with Ravi and Shukla Yoga, enhancing the festival’s significance. This rare combination is expected to amplify the positive effects of the rituals performed on this day.
