The much-awaited festival is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi and Ganeshotsav.The commencement of the festival is marked with the installation of Ganeshas clay idols in homes and public places, commonly known as pandals, and concludes when the idol is carried in a public procession and immersed (visarjan) in a waterbody on the last day of the festival, which is commonly known as Anant Chaturdashi by people.
