The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on the Trayodashi Tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, every year. It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a golden pot on this day. Besides, the birth anniversary of Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, is also celebrated on the day of Trayodashi Tithi. 

This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on November 10, 2023. Purchasing new things has special significance on Dhanteras. According to scriptures, it is also believed that whoever makes purchases on Dhanteras brings happiness and prosperity to his home.

Making purchase of something new on Dhanteras is believed to be auspicious. According to the Hindu Panchang, the auspicious time for shopping on Dhanteras is from 12:35 PM on November 10 till 1:57 PM on November 11, 2023.

Dhanteras Lakshmi Puja Muhurat

Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber are worshiped on the holy festival of Dhanteras. The auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras will be from 05:47 PM to 07:47 PM on Friday, November 10.
Importance of shopping on Dhanteras

During the auspicious time on Dhanteras, apart from utensils and gold and silver, it is considered auspicious to purchase vehicles, real estate deals, luxury items and other household items. According to scriptures, it is believed that the movable and immovable property purchased on the day of Dhanteras increases thirteen times.

What to buy on Dhanteras?

Buying gold and silver, is considered auspicious on Dhanteras. One can also buy utensils, vehicles and Kuber Yantra on the day of Dhanteras.

It is also believed that one can appease Goddess Lakshmi as buying a broom is considered auspicious and makes a person financially strong. 

On the other hand, if you are not able to buy any expensive item on the day of Dhanteras, then one can also bring home whole coriander. It is believed that there is never any shortage of money due to this. 

You can also buy Gomati Chakra to appease Goddess Lakshmi.

What not to buy on Dhanteras?

Iron utensils or products:

It is not considered auspicious to bring home iron or items made of iron on this day. It is said that it brings bad luck enters the house.

People also buy aluminium or steel items on Dhanteras, which, according to believes is not considered auspicious. 

Plastic items: 

Buying plastic items is also not considered auspicious, it can reduce the stability of wealth and blessings, hence do not buy plastic items on the day of Dhanteras.

Glass items:

One should not buy glass or glass items at all. Buying ceramic or bone China item on the day of Dhanteras should be avoided.

Here are some of the measures to optimise the positive energies on Dhanteras:

  • On Dhanteras, worship Lord Ganesha, Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, Kuber and Yamraj.
  • Diseases can be cured by lighting 13 lamps inside and outside the house on the day of Dhanteras.
  • Donating is a moral thing to do. It is believed that giving away or donating something cleanses one's sins from a past birth.
  • If you donate before sunset on this day, you will not face shortage of money. However, white cloth, rice, sugar etc. are not to be donated on this day.
  • Worshiping animals on Dhanteras relieves financial problems.

Dhanteras Significance

Though there are several stories behind the celebration of Dhanteras. But one of the legends says, when the ocean was churned by gods and demons to obtain Amrit, fourteen gems were obtained from it one by one. After the churning of the ocean, Amrit was obtained last. It is said that Lord Dhanvantari appeared from the sea with a pot of nectar in his hands. The day on which Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar pot was Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, hence there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Dhanvantari on the day of Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi.
