Choti Diwali is also known as Narak Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas, or Yamdeep Daan. It is an important festival of Hindu religion which is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Choti Diwali is celebrated to symbolise the war between Lord Shri Krishna and the demon Narakasura. It is believed that Lord Shri Krishna had killed Narakasura on this day and freed the people from his tyranny. Therefore, this day is also celebrated as the victory of good over evil.
It is believed that one can get freedom from the past sins and attain salvation by Deep Daan. The auspicious time for Yamdeep Daan on Choti Diwali is from 1:57 PM to 2:43 PM. By donating Yamdeep in this auspicious time, Lord Yamraj is pleased and bestows happiness, prosperity and longevity in life.
On the day of Choti Diwali, Rangoli is decorated at doors of houses. On this day people wear new clothes and distribute sweets. For Yamdeep Daan, a lamp is lit outside the house and Yamraj is worshipped. On this day people take bath in the river or pond and worship Lord Shri Krishna.
On the day of Narak Chaturdashi, Lord Yama is worshiped for salvation from untimely death. According to mythological beliefs, on this day Lord Shri Krishna had killed the demon named Narakasura. Also on this day, one takes bath by applying ubtan, hence it is also called Roop Chaudas.
Also, on the day of Narak Chaturdashi, light at least 5 or 7 lamps outside your house.
