Chhath Puja 2023: Do’s and Don’ts while performing puja

Chhath Puja begins on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik Maas and continues till Saptami Tithi.

Chhath Puja will be celebrated from November 17 and will continue till November 20, 2023. The four-day long festival which is widely celebrated by people in Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and holds special importance in Hindu religion and begins on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik Maas and continues till Saptami Tithi.

It is believed that one should not do any mistake while performing puja to seek the blessings of Chhath Maiya. Here are some of them:

Do’s during Chhath Puja

Be clean and take a bath daily before touching indulging yourself in any of the processes of Chhath Puja.
Always wash your hands and before touching any belongings used in the puja.
Before making Prasad, make sure you clean your hands and feet well.
On the day of Chhath Puja during Sandhya Ghat and Bhorwa Ghat, take a bath, wear new clothes and then accompany your family and friends at the banks of the river.
Worship the Sun God and take the blessings of elders.

Don’ts during Chhath Puja

Do not use plastic utensils
Do not consume garlic and onion
Do not eat anything without offering water to the Sun God.
Do not use ordinary salt in everyday meals during these four days. Instead, rock salt can be used. 
Do not let children eat or bite the puja fruits and Prasad until the festival comes to a halt.
Do not eat non-vegetarian items at home if someone in your family is about to observe the Chhath Puja.
Do not wear dirty clothes during puja instead; wear only clean and new clothes.

Fruits to be used in Chhath Puja

Different types of fruits are offered to Chhathi Maiya. These include Sugarcane, Sugarcane, Chestnuts (singhara), Coconut and banana that are commonly used. 

The day is spent preparing prasad at home, which often consists of bamboo baskets decorated with fruits, thekua and rice laddus. On the eve of this day, the entire family along with the devotee goes to the river bank, pond or other large body of water to offer Arghya to the setting sun.
