Chhath Puja 2023 - Day 3: Timings, Rituals for evening Surya Arghya

Day 3 of Chhath Puja is one of the important days of the festival. Sandhya Arghya or Evening Arghya is offered to Lord Sun on this day.

Chhath Puja festival which is dedicated to Surya Bhagwan or the Sun God. The festivities continue for four days and devotees observe a strict fast during these days. This year, Chhath Puja will be celebrated from November 17 and will conclude on November 20 after offering Arghya to the rising Sun. The rituals of Chhath begins with Nahay Khay and Kharna on Day 2.

According to the scriptures the third day of Chhath Puja is the most important day of Mahaparv. On this day, Arghya is offered to the Sun God in the evening which is commonly known as Sandhya Arghya. 

Time of Arghya to the setting Sun

Sandhya Arghya will be offered to setting Sun on November 19 at 05:26 PM.

Worship method and rituals

  • To offer Sandhya Arghya, the devotees and their family members gather on the banks of a river or pond. They cover a clean place with cow dung and place chowki (a stool made of wooden plank) on it. At the chowki, they place a thali containing offerings, flowers, fruits and sweets. They also light a lamp.
  • Family then prays together to seek the blessings of Lord Sun.
  • At the end of the puja, they offer Arghya to the Sun God. They carry water, milk, honey, rice, flowers and fruits in a basket. They stand in a river or pond and keep the basket on their heads. Then, they dip the basket in water.
  • After offering Arghya, they take Prasad and wait for the day 4 to offer Arghya to rising Sun.
