Bhai Dooj 2023: How did it start? Know the auspicious time of Tilak

The five-day festival of Diwali ends with Bhai Dooj. This day symbolises the strong relationship and love between brother and sister. On this day, sisters apply tilak on their brother's forehead and pray for his long life. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters as a sign of love. The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik Maas. As Tithi is falling between two days, there is a lot of confusion among people regarding the date of Bhai Dooj. 

Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month will start at 2: 36 PM on November 14, 2023 and will end at 1: 47 PM on November 15, 2023. According to Udaya Tithi, the festival of bond between brother and sister, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 15. 

According to astrology, sisters can apply tilak to their brothers at any time except Rahu kaal. But if we talk about the most inauspicious time, it is from 06:44 to 09:24 in the morning. On this day, Rahu kaal will be from 12:03 PM to 01:24 PM.

History & Significance Bhai Dooj

This festival of brother-sister was started by River Yamuna. Both Yamraj and Yamuna are children of Sun God. Yamraj loved his sister Yamuna very much. Once he was missing his sister a lot. It had been a long time since I saw him. Then suddenly he reached sister Yamuna's house. Yamuna was very happy to see her brother. He prepared many dishes to welcome his brother. When he was about to leave, Yamuna applied tilak on his forehead and fed him sweets and presented him with a coconut. After this Yamraj asked his sister to ask for a boon from him as a gift.

Yamuna then stated, "Brother, I have everything; all I ask is that you visit my home on this day each year at least once." Added that Yamraj would grant a long life to the brother, not just to me on this day, but also to the brother who visits his sister's home and has her put tilak on his forehead. All his problems will be resolved.

Keep these things in mind while performing tilak

• Mythological views dictate that since Yamraj and Yamuna initiated Bhai Dooj, brother and sister should both worship them before to performing Tilak. The brother's tilak should be completed after this. The sister should offer prayers at the puja to take away all of her brother's problems and to give him a long life.
• Whenever you do Tilak, keep in mind that while doing Tilak, the brother's face should be towards North or North-West and the sister's face should be towards North-East or East.
• The sister should keep a fast before applying tilak to the brother. Even God is pleased with your loyalty, love and dedication and the relationship between you and your brother remains good. The sister should break her fast only after applying tilak.
• After applying Tilak, feed sweets to your brother. Also, every brother must give some gift to his sister on this day as per his capacity.
• On the day of Bhai Dooj, brother and sister should not have any kind of dispute nor should they abuse each other. If there is any kind of dispute between you and your sister, then resolve it today and remove the rift.
• Brother goes to his sister's house on Bhai Dooj. On this day, sister should respect her brother with all her heart. If for some reason brother cannot visit her sister, then sister should send the tilak material and dry coconut to his brother's house.
• It is believed that one should not wear black clothes while performing any auspicious task. Wearing black clothes during auspicious occasion is prohibited in the scriptures.

Why do sisters offer coconuts to brothers?

After applying Tilak on the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters gift a coconut shell to their brother. It is believed that when Yamraj reached Yamuna's house for the first time on this day, sister Yamuna welcomed him and gifted him a coconut shell while leaving. Since then, the tradition of gifting coconut on the day of Bhai Dooj started.
