New Delhi: Ashtasatvik Bhava refers to eight (Ashta) physical and emotional reactions that manifest in a devotee due to intense spiritual experiences and devotional feelings. These reactions are part of the Bhakti Yoga tradition in Hinduism and are often associated with the deep love and devotion (Bhava) towards the divine. 

It is also believed that it helps in the awakening of Kundalini. It is a positive development of Bhakti Yoga. People believe that any prayer said in this stage is answered by God. It was named Bhava Samadhi by Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. It is a level beneath enlightenment or Samaadhi. In actuality, this is the outpouring of feelings that had been repressed.

Devotees who are full of emotions or those who want to know the facts of their existence and purpose can directly make a connection with the deity. When you discover there is no one closer or bigger than you, feelings that were accumulated without knowing the reality come crashing down.

According to mythology, the eight Satvik Bhavas are:

  • Stambha: Petrification
  • Sveda: Perspiration or sweating
  • Romanch: Horripilation or goosebumps
  • Svarabheda: Faltering of the voice
  • Vepathu: Trembling
  • Vaivarnya: Change in complexion
  • Ashru: Tears or weeping
  • Pralaya: Fainting or losing consciousness.

These responses are believed to arise when a devotee's mind and heart are overwhelmed with divine love and spiritual ecstasy.

Why do People cry in front of idols in temples?

Crying in front of idols in temples is a common expression of deep emotional and spiritual experiences. Several reasons for this include:

Emotional Overwhelm: Devotees often feel an intense emotional connection with the deity, leading to tears of love, gratitude, or relief.

Spiritual Ecstasy: A profound sense of divine presence can lead to an overwhelming feeling of joy and bliss, manifesting as tears.

Repentance and Surrender: Tears can be a sign of repentance for sins or past actions or a complete surrender to the divine will.

Seeking Solace: In times of distress or difficulty, devotees may cry out of a desire for comfort, guidance, and support from the deity.

Gratitude and Devotion: Tears can also be an expression of deep gratitude for blessings received and a way to show unconditional devotion.

These experiences are seen as a natural and positive aspect of one's spiritual journey, indicating a deepening relationship with the divine.
