With the Ganesh Chaturthi festival around the corner, the people of Assam’s Fatasil area in Guwahati are all set to welcome the deity of prosperity. The people of the Fatasil area have installed a 30-feet tall idol of Lord Ganesha.

The festival celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha as the ‘God of New Beginnings’ and the ‘Remover of Obstacles’ as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence.

The initiative to welcome the deity has been taken by the Dr BR Ambedkar Youth Club in Guwahati, who has been organising the festival from past 37 years in the area. A 30-feet-tall idol of Lord Ganesha has been erected to attract devotees and the general public. This year Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on September 18 and 19.

According to the organizing committee, preparations to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi are in full swing in the area and the 30-feet-tall idol of Lord Ganesha will be unveiled on September 18 and the festival will be celebrated for 10 days in total.

The Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which falls in the Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar, and in August or September as per Georgian calendar, which marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

People also recall the day as Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav. Across the country, the festival is marked with the installation of clay idols of Lord Ganesha. People also welcome the deity in their homes and publicly on elaborate pandals.  

The 10-day festival ends with the Visarjan of the idol, which is also known as Anant Chaturdashi, which will fall on September 29, this year. The idol then immersed in a nearby water body, followed by a public procession.

This year the Ganesh Chaturthi festival will begin on September 19 and will continue for ten days until September 29.
